I am so frustrated. Because of the snow days the Middle school hasn't been able to have their Valentine's Party until yesterday. They hired a DJ for the kids and had a party for the kids for an hour and a half after school. When I picked up Kaylyn from school she was so excited because she won a "prize". It turns out the DJ gave out 3 cd's to the "best dancers". I should add that school intentionally doesn't call this a "dance" because they don't want the focus to be on dancing. I was considering not letting the girls go because I don't think middle schoolers need to be "partnering up" on a dance floor. It just isn't age-appropriate in my belief and it is asking for trouble. I discussed my concerns with the girls and they agreed to no dancing with boys.
Back to the "prize". It was a cd containing 18 songs from various artists. My first question was "how is this legal" there are copyright laws against this. Then Kaylyn informs me that the DJ told her she had to make 4 copies of it and share it with the four other girls that were dancing with her. WHAT!?!? Now he wants us to break the law?
Things were busy last night so I told her she couldn't listen to the cd until I can get online and get the lyrics for the songs. We don't really listen to secular music so I didn't recognize any of the songs but I did recognize some of the artists and I was very concerned.
This morning while the kids were getting ready for school I looked up some of the lyrics and about choked! Now, I have learned that some artists have "clean versions" of their songs so that they can be played on the radio and the lyrics I found were most certainly not the "clean versions" but still. I listened to the cd and compared it to the lyrics and they were still awful. It is all about sex. I am only going to list one of the titles and I am going to try to type it in a way that it doesn't come up in a search but to give you an idea it was from Sn00p D0gg's new album and the name of the "clean version" is $en$ual $educti0n but the original version's name is $en$ual Erupti0n and the lyrics are basically the same. I was absolutely appalled.
So where was I first thing this morning you ask? I was in the principals office showing him the lyrics of 5 of the songs and giving him this wonderful "prize" back. He had no idea that the DJ handed these out and had the same concerns that I did. The teacher that was in charge of the party and hiring the DJ was out sick today so he wasn't able to discus what took place with her right then.
When Kaylyn came home from school today she did tell me that the principle called her into his office to get the names of the other 2 girls that were given cd's and he told them to bring them back to school so that they could be destroyed and explained that if you are caught with pirated music you can get thousands of dollars worth of fines. Which he knows first hand because his son's college roommate got a $3000 fine just last year for this very reason.
So where does that leave us? I don't know but I do know that I feel Satan is on the attack and I don't like it.

Wow! I can't believe they handed that out but I'm glad the principal took the steps he did. And super glad that you listened to it before you let Kaylyn. I've heard that song and I can only imagine (not that I want to) the other songs on that CD!
I had a similar experience once when I was in MS, we had a party or something like that and I "won" a CD. It was something I knew I wouldn't be allowed to listen to and I knew I wouldn't listen to. I ended up being able to trade the CD for a more appropriate one.
Also, I'm super proud of the girls for saying that they wouldn't dance with guys. High school dances are bad enough for that, middle schoolers don't need to be doing that too!
First I have to say good for you. You checked out the music and went to the school. A lot of parents wouldn't have done that. I agree that middle school doesn't need to even be promoting a dance and I bet next year they will be more careful.
Hats of to you! You stood your ground against satan. I have never heard the song because we limit secular music in our home too. Based on the artist I can only image what the lyrics are.
We all need to do more standing and fighting Jen! I'm proud of you! Even though you wonder where the others are who would be concerned that didn't stop you! We need to cover our children! Satan cannot have them!!!
Thanks for being on top of this! I think satan was having a field day this week around here! He's been attacking a lot of us - now the kids too! I know that we're all under attack all the time but sometimes it seems more so than other times. We need to stick together and keep fighting against evil!
I think it is terrible what our young kids are exposed to everyday, whether it is in music or TV. I really do not understand how so many people think it is ok to expose children to sex and violence.
I think Snoop Dog is to old for me let alone a middle schooler.
Good for you and I hope it makes the school look in to what is being handed out as prizes next time.
Good for you for being that involved in your kids lives! I'm glad to hear that the principal was so willing to do the right thing as well.
Good for you for taking a stand and so happy to hear that he principal felt the same way.
Great parenting!!!
Good job going to the principal, and good that he was right there and willing to handle this promptly. I hate thinking about the terrible things that our kids are exposed to everyday.
Good for you!
Caleb is into music and I am the one that purchases and loads his music onto his mp3. He hasnt asked for anything obscene but I know his cousin has some nasty stuff on his ipod. I keep an eye out to make sure Caleb doesn't listen to his cousins ipod
I'm very impressed with you too. That's awesome that you checked it out - and also that you care. A lot of parents really don't care what's going in the children's ears and eyes. Bummer that it turned out that way though.
Unbelievable! That's great that you checked it all out. I'm glad the principal handled it well too.
That is terrible. I'm so glad you went to the principle and took care of it.
Good reminder that we have to be ever-vigilant with what our kids get exposed to.
I applaud you for taking a proactive stand against evil coming against your children. Blessings to you!
Oh so that's why Mr. Thompson stopped me in the hallway today. I was scared. He asked if we knew who got the cds at the "dance". I had no idea though. You don't have to worry about the "dances" too much except for the djs because they leave the lights on and arent allowed to play any slow songs now. So they are boring but sort of fun if you just chill wit yo friends. Yup that's the 8th grade perspective on this so-called "dance".
All I have to say is YOU GO GIRL!!!! Absolutely you did the right thing...I would have been right there with you if that was my kids. I have two boys in middle school, they have been in private Christian school from Pre-K through 5th grade and we decided it was time to release them into public schools. (EEK!)
I never forget that each and every day the evil one wants to steal, kill, and destroy and for us moms I think he goes right after our kids and our marriages...there is nothing that would bring him more glory than taking down the kids of the righteous.
Sorry...jumped on a soap box, getting off of it now, but...good for you!
What an ordeal! I am so glad you checked the lyrics. I think sometimes we say things are wrong just beause we 'think' they may be. But, you found out for sure, which gives you much credibility when trying to solve this. And, your daughter also can see that you took the time to really check it out. Good Mom!
Can you believe that artist you spoke about has a show on TV called Fatherhood...about how he raises his children? It is disgusting!
Wow! Glad you caught it.
Dumb question....
how did you know the CD was pirated? I know, I have been living in Japan too long.
