I have wanted Kaylyn to be tested for allergies for some time but our previous doctor did not really think there was a need. We recently changed doctors because our previous doctor had moved to an office further away.
Kaylyn had her first physical with the new doctor back in August and without me even suggesting anything the doctor asked me if I ever considered having Kaylyn tested for allergies. I chuckled and explained that I have wanted her tested but the previous doctor didn't see a need.
An appointment was set up before we left that day. We missed our first scheduled appointment because one of the requirements is you need to be off all allergy medication for 2 weeks prior to testing. Unfortunately the Friday before her Monday appointment Kaylyn was out in the garden and broke out in a rash all over her hands and arms and called me for what she should do. Without even giving it a second thought, because it is normal for her, I told her to go ahead and take Benadryl. It dawned on me that Sunday night as I was getting her paperwork ready that I just ruined her allergy test for the next day. Bummer! I called and re-scheduled.
Today she had her allergy test done. It was not good. The poor girl is allergic to everything environmental. The short list: dogs (we own 2), cats, rabbits (we had 1-just gave it to school), horses, small rodents (hamster, gerbil, etc), cantaloupe (already knew that from a reaction she had but they confirmed it), ragweed, tree pollens, molds (which means no real Christmas tree this year), grass (she should never be out when the grass is being mowed), cockroaches, dust mites (which means she gets to say good buy to her stuffed animals).... the list goes on and is much more specific but it is a lot. The nurse asked if I had a camera on my cell phone because it was a bad reaction. They rate them 1+ to 4+ with a 4+ being the worst and hers were all 4+ except one (of the ones that reacted). I wish I had thought to take a camera so her siblings could see what she had to go through. Then they had to prick her arm 5 times to confirm a couple more of the "questionable reactions".
They also did asthma tests on her because she has had pneumonia before. Sure enough she also has asthma. She has complained to me before during track when she is running but she tends to be "a little dramatic" (those that know her are chuckling now because that is such an under statement) so I didn't think much of it. Turns out she shouldn't be doing any kind of exercising without using an inhaler. They gave her one before we left the office. She needs to use it before gym class everyday.
I feel like we have so much to process right now. It has been an overwhelming day as far as so much "new to me" information.
Please pray for Kaylyn. She doesn't like change and was having the hardest time with the idea of having to get rid of stuffed animals. She has a bear that she has had for years that she sleeps with every night. Then also the idea of not having a real Christmas tree. Mark always takes the kids to pick out and cut down our own every year and Kaylyn loves "traditions".
Thanks for letting me get that all off my chest.
-Smiles!

I feel for her. We have been through that whole testing thing too. We no longer have a real tree because of allergies. Both Laura and Andy have allergies and some asthma problems. Andy is doing much better now that he isn't in Michigan. Tell her we will be praying for her.
Um...so sorry. I am an allergy prone person, too. And when I have a reaction...it is big time.
I always feel that once you have all the facts...then you can begin to change what you need to to get better...even if those changes are hard. Maybe it wouldn't be so hard if you could just pack her animals away for a while insted of getting rid of them.
I know a mom here who had to do the same thing, but her son was younger. He would not be without his bear at night. She finally resorted to putting the bear in a zip up pillow case...and he was satisfied because it could still be near him.
Good luck!
SORRY KAELYN HAS ALL THOSE ALLERGIES. THAT IS SOOO MANY TO HAVE.
I HOPE SHE CAN HANDLE GETTING RID OF HER STUFF ANIMALS.
I HAD MY DAUGHTER GO THROUGH ALLERGY TEST TOO AND ASTHMA STUFF BECAUSE SHE HAD ISSUES. WELL, NO ALLERGIES, I THINK STRESS WAS THE BREATHING THING AND ALSO, HEARTBURN (ACID REFLUX)
DON'T get rid of her stuffed animals for good! Put them away for a while and once she's been on the injections for a while she might be able to handle them ok again.
I have asthma too so I feel her pain! I now carry an Epi Pen (Jen-you already carry one of these anyway!) and a rescue inhaler. I also take an inhaler every morning (different one for asthma - it used to be twice/day but now I'm down to just once). Make sure she gets a flu shot this year too!
Logan and I are with ya Kaylyn! Logan's been having shots for over 3 years now and he had really bad allergies - now they're not nearly as bad! :)
Thinking of you, Kaylyn,
We deal with lots of allergies in this house as well and Nate has Asthma too. It does get better!!!
Sorry for Kaylyn, and shame on that doctor! Shows their human!
I feel so bad for her. That really stinks. I'm glad she's got such a great mom to get her through this!!
I feel your pain. If you want any suggestions let me know. I'm sure Erica would be happy to know that Someone else out there is in her boat even if sometimes it feels like it's sinking. As far as the stuffed animals go, we let Erica keep the ones that could be washed in hot water and in place of the ones that had to go we took her to build-a-bear (they have 2 choices that can be washed -but you can't put any of the extras inside). On the up side you may see some relief of her asthma once some of the allergy triggers are removed =) though if it's exersize induced maybe not. It almost brings tears to my eyes for her but I also know she'll feel alot better once she starts to get the symptoms under controll. Also just FYI, some kids get hyper from the Albuterol, Erica does not! -instead she gets chatty -good luck with that =)
DMS
Oh no I'm chuckling about DMS's comment about getting hyper or chatty.I'll include that in my prayers for Kaylyn and you.Maybe the benefits of the shots will out weigh the shots themselves.Hope so.Take care,Patty
Poor Kaylyn! Dylan reacted the same way when he was tested - it's NOT fun. He has been on the shots now for about 4 months, and is doing very well with them.
We'll be praying for Kaylyn, and for you, as you make all of these adjustments.
Poor thing - and poor mama. :) This is really the season for those allergies, too. I hope it becomes "normal" for you all soon.
About the gas situation:
Because of the recent back-to-back hurricanes, we are WAY low on gas supplies in the Southeast. We get most of our gas from the Gulf, so there ya go. There is only one running at capacity, several are off line, and a couple of others are at half the normal capacity. They are saying another week or so, but I'll believe it when I see it. Yesterday was the first time in about 3 weeks that I have not had to wait in a line. Pumps everywhere (and we have LOTS!) are completely closed. I've never seen such a thing before, either!
I feel like you are walking in my shoes! My daughter is also allergic to almost everything on planet earth, plus asthma. She is now an adult and thing have eased considerably for her. Good docs, meds and lots of prayer is the key. I shall be praying for your precious Kaylyn!
Aww....poor girl! I hope that she can adjust well, and I'll be praying for her!!! Love ya Kaylyn!! :)
Is she your only one with allergies? Bummer... what a lot of changes to make all at once!!
Ugh! So sorry to hear this!
My son has a peanut allergy and is also allergic to some grass, some dogs, and other things.
I hope she can adjust to all the changes. Hopefully they will be worth it when she starts to feel better!
Oh man - my heart goes out to her - allergy testing is not a good memory! I think Kayln might be my long-lost twin sister! But there is hope - summer's used to be torture for me with all the allergies, and I've grown out of a lot of them. I rarely have to take pills now. Give her a hug from me!
