I love this new song!

Warren Barfield - "Love Is Not A Fight"

Lyrics:

Love is not a place
to come and go as we please.
It's a house we enter in
then commit to never leave.

So lock the door behind you.
Throw away the key.
Work it out together.
Let it bring us to our knees.

Love is a shelter
in a raging storm.
Love is peace
in the middle of a war
If we try to leave;
May God send angels to guard the door
No, Love is not a fight
but its something worth fighting for.

Some love is a word
that they can fall into.
But when they're falling out
keeping that word is hard to do.

Love is a shelter
in a raging storm.
Love is peace
in the middle of a war.
If we try to leave;
May God send angels to guard the door.
No, Love is not a fight
but its something worth fighting for.

Love will come to save us
If we'll only call.
He will ask nothing from us
but demand we give our all.

Love is a shelter
in a raging storm.
Love is peace
in the middle of a war.
If we try to leave;
May God send angels to guard the door.
No, Love is not a fight
but its something worth fighting for.

Yard work!

Yesterday I planted four big pots of flowers and raked out the garden one more time so that we could finally get it planted.

It is nice having a "big guy" around to move things...

Zack is carrying this pot up to the deck so that I can plant some tomato plants in it.

I planted two pots like this for by the pool...

and two pots like this for the deck...

Poor Zack, I didn't think of how much heavier they would be after I watered them. I should have waited to water them until they were on the deck.

If you look close, or click on the picture to enlarge it, you can see Mark in the background waiting to finish up the garden with me. Kaylyn and Libby were a HUGE help with the planting. They really "dug in" and helped out.

Mark also finished up the fire pit. He hadn't bought enough stones the first time and had to go back to get more. We already used it Monday night for S'mores with the kids. Of course they loved it.

The fire pit looks a lot like Shelly's and Mark already had the stuff bought before I had a chance to show him the picture of Shelly's. Great minds...

Newspaper write up on Zack

There was a really cool write up on Zack in one of our local papers today. You can see it here or read it below.

Allendale thrower ranks among nation's best
by Grant Lofdahl
Tuesday May 27, 2008, 3:38 PM

Many people have gifts, whether they be in music, art, mathematics, medicine - or in throwing heavy objects long distances.

That last gift is the one Allendale junior Zack Hill was blessed with. The Falcons' biggest standout track and field competitor - both literally and figuratively - has made his mark on the local and state scene in 2008 by hurling the discus and shot put farther than any local thrower in recent years.

Hill began his throwing career as an eighth-grader and had an inauspicious start - he wasn't even the best thrower on his own team. Fellow Class of 2009 member CJ Koop was already an excellent throwing competitor, and his throws were farther than Hill's. However, Allendale throwing coach Brandon Sloterbeek said he could see a great deal of potential in both young men.

"I think we knew in eighth grade both Zack and CJ were exceptional throwers," said Sloterbeek. "CJ was beating him then substantially, but Zack just had the body type for a thrower. There was definitely a lot of potential there. Both he and CJ were in the 40s (feet) for shot in middle school, so they were exceptional throwers from the beginning."

That potential should be clear to anyone who knows Hill's father, Mark. Mark Hill was a standout football player at West Ottawa High School who moved on to play at both Michigan and Michigan State. As it turns out, Zack got some important throwing attributes from his mother Jennifer as well.

"I got my size from my dad," said Zack. "But I think I got a lot of the mind part of it from my mom - the way I can feel myself in the throwing circle.

"My dad played center and long-snapper at Michigan and then transferred and played guard at Michigan State."

As a ninth-grader, he continued to grow and continued to throw. By Hill's sophomore year he held Allendale's school records in both shot and disc. But beyond his considerable athletic ability and achievements in the throwing circle, Falcons head track coach Brett Cataldo said Hill is the kind of kid who others admire and would do well to emulate.

"Zack is a great kid and a good role model as a positive contributor at school," said Cataldo. "He does the right things. He has strong character and an excellent work ethic. His parents are very supportive, and along with Brandon they have put him in a position to train at high levels all year. It is clear that he has done the work over the off season because his performances are amazing this spring."

Amazing indeed. Sloterbeek and Hill worked out extremely hard over the winter in preparation for Zack's junior season. Lifting weights intensely and participating in several indoor track meets, Hill showed signs of doing even greater things than one might expect from a sophomore school record holder. He achieved major goals early by in the outdoor season by throwing the disc over 160 feet and putting the shot over 55.

Sloterbeek said Hill's passion for his sport has been a big reason for his success this season.

"In addition to natural talent it's drive and a love for the sport," Sloterbeek said. "He loves throwing a lot, so that makes him work on it, think about, it all the time.

"We got a lot more depth to our training program this year. We've been lifting a lot longer. We did a lot of work in January, February, and the number of lifts, the different styles of lifts, those are the things that we did a lot better this year."

Hill said he's always been bigger than his classmates, and growing accustomed to his own size and strength was another factor in his improvement.

"Maturing into my body is just the biggest thing," Hill said. "I was just a really big kid. And all the off-season training has really paid off too."

Asked how far he hopes to throw and what his goals are for this season and beyond, he said.
"Just wherever the Lord takes me pretty much, just to get as good as I can."

So far he's been awfully good. Hill surpassed the 60-foot mark in the shot in a league dual meet and then exceeded 170 feet in the disc. At the Ottawa County meet last Thursday night, he amazed spectators with a mighty heave of 187 feet, seven inches in the discus. Still just an 11th-grader, he has attracted the interest of local track powers Grand Valley State University and Calvin College, and he's also received interest from NCAA Division 1 heavyweights like Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Purdue.

With the MITCA and MHSAA state finals going on the weekends of the 24th and the 31st, Hill's primary focus is on winning state championships (he placed fourth in the shot at the MHSAA finals last year). Still, he also admitted that the Grand Rapids Press area records - 196-5 in the discus by Grandville's Brett Organek in 1992 and 64-10 3/4 in the shot by Middleville's Gary VanElst way back in 1968 - are something he's thought about and hopes one day to achieve.

Currently, the junior is ranked third in the state in the shot and fourth in disc, and he is rated in the top-30 in the United States in both according to high school track web site Dyestat.com. Coach Cataldo said Hill, now 6-1 and 270 pounds and likely still growing, still has even greater throws left in him.

"I think he still has the potential to throw farther. He has consistently gotten better as the season has progressed," said Cataldo. "His work ethic and the coaching Brandon is doing with him are paying off. The future is bright for Zack as long as he continues to do the work that he is capable of and train hard."

As for Sloterbeek, the throwing coach said he's given up trying to predict or set limits on how far Hill can throw.

"I won't speculate on that, I don't have any idea," said Hill. "As far as God wants him to throw - I could put a number out there, but the last time I did that he crushed it. We set a goal during indoor track of 55 feet, and he threw 59-2, just out of the blue. I don't think anyone can say how far he's going to throw."

With his coaches behind him and teammate Koop, who'd be the best thrower on most any other high school track team, pushing him in practice and in meets, the sky appears to be no limit for Zack Hill. He will continue striving for greater performances, using his gift: throwing heavy objects far into that sky.

Freeze Advisory, Grr!

I was all ready/excited to plant my garden today until hubby called on his way to work this morning and said that there is a freeze advisory out for tonight. Bummer. Tomorrow you will find me in my garden planting all the veggies and fruit that we bought on Monday at Motman's with Brandon's help. Thank you Brandon!

This isn't a very good picture of the garden because I was too lazy to walk out and take a good picture but this is after Brandon tilled it up for me. I raked out the clumps of sod this past Friday.

Here is how I spent part of my Memorial Day....

It is going to kill me that my sister lives 57 miles north of us. I am going to have to take out a small loan just to cover the gas.

Meme - 7 Facts about me

I've been tagged by my friend Erica at Herzog Family on her scrap-booking blog. Check out this post for some incredible pictures.

Here are the rules:

1. Link your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Here are 7 facts about me:
1. I rarely finish any project fully. Maybe that is where Zack's ADD comes from.
2. I am going to have a garden this year. THANK YOU BRANDON!
3. I don't like talking on the telephone. Maybe another ADD thing, but I am easily distracted.
4. I miss my Mother-in-law. Audrey Jean Hill 9/8/1934 - 8/8/2005.
5. My toes are often purple. Not very attractive in summer sandals.
6. I snack on Ramon Noodles plain, uncooked, broken up into bite sized pieces.
7. I am leaving the US for the first time this summer. Unless you count walking over the border in Texas into Mexico and back, oh and driving into Canada.

Now, here are seven bloggers that I am tagging:
(Don't feel obligated it is supposed to be fun. Wink!)
1. Angie @ The Knightly News
2. Brandon @ Bsloterbeek's Weblog (This is the name you pick for your blog and you are an English major?)
3. Cheri @ Just Another Day in Paradise
4. Dawn @ The Sloterbeek Scoop (I think you need to help Brandon on a more creative name for his blog.)
5. Elisa @ Extravagant grace
-. F (I can't find a single name beginning with an F)
6. Gayle @ Grace For Gayle (Read this post. I read it to Mark through tears because I was laughing so hard. He didn't get the humor. What is wrong with him? Maybe it's a mom thing)
7. Heather @ Heather's Ramblings

Wow, linking all that takes a lot of time. I need to go get ready for the day. Mark is meeting me for lunch, then we are hitting a bucket of balls (I am going golfing with some girlfriends tomorrow and Mark doesn't want me to embarrass myself I guess. LOL!) Then we have a track meet for Zack. Busy day as usual!

Kudos to Brandon for tilling up a space for my garden last night. You rock!

Zack and Tyler sang James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" for Collage last night. I didn't know that they were going to do it without any music so I missed the very start of the song.

Field Trip, Pet's pet, and Pool updates

I went along with Libby on her field trip to the Grand Rapids Civic Theater today. They did a play on the book "Miss Nelson is Missing!". It was very well done. Then we went to the park for lunch and to play.

I think our dog Allie would like a pet of her own, HOWEVER, I don't know of anything that would want to be her pet. She was trying to convince this poor baby rabbit to be her pet by throwing it in the air whenever it tried to escape. You will be happy to know I rescued said rabbit and moved it to the empty lot next to us. Now that bunny better not thank me by coming back to eat my garden.

Our pool is looking much better. They have put the dirt back in place, repaired the tear and are starting to fill it back up. The State Farm claims rep was supposed to have come out this morning to "asses" the situation. I was not home so hopefully we will hear from them soon regarding his evaluation.

Mark's birthday, Mother's Day, Pool problems

Life has been super busy so I am going to try to make this really quick...

Mark's birthday was Saturday. This is a picture of him from last fall. I just realized while looking for a picture of him that I need to take more pictures of him.

He planned a surprise for me, isn't that just like him. He reserved a 4:30pm tee off time for a game of golf for the 2 of us. He planned on 9 holes and before we even finished the first hole he realized we wouldn't be keeping score. I have only golfed once before so this was a learning lesson for me. Who woulda thought that it would be so hard to hit a little ball. We both had a great time and by the 18th hole (we did 10-18) I was actually looking like I might know what I was doing.

Then we met my VERY pregnant sister and her husband for dinner in Muskegon. They are getting impatient (due the 19th) so they are trying to fill up all of their spare time instead of just sitting home and waiting. She is feeling great. We enjoyed catching up with them and hearing about what they are thinking about the upcoming birth.

Mother's day was wonderful. My husband got up early and made everyone breakfast. While I was eating my breakfast my kids gave me a gift of Vera Wang "Princess" perfume. It smells so good! They also gave me a gift card to Victoria Secret and a singing card that they recorded their own voices on with Zack at the end singing in true 80's fashion "my Shinin' star" because that was the music that came on after their recording. I love it and will keep it around until it doesn't work anymore.

Then while I was teaching YC&W at 2nd service my family came home and made lunch. Zack cooked steaks on the grill, Anna made these potato bites, Kaylyn made this dessert, Libby helped over-see it all, and Mark heated up some frozen mixed veggies to round out the meal. It was absolutely delicious! Mark had asked me earlier in the week if I wanted him to take us out on Sunday and I had told him that I would much rather enjoy my family at home with home cooked food I just don't want to have to make it. My wish came true.

In the afternoon while Mark was catching up on some much needed sleep (long hours at the nursery) I took the girls (Zack went Turkey hunting) to visit my Grand parents and then we went over to my parents for a little while.

(This picture is from a visit 2 months ago.)
It was hard seeing my Grandma. She is in advance stages of dimensia and has just had a bout with a urinary track infection last week that really took it's toll on her. She looked like she had aged 10 years. She is usually spunky and Sunday she was very quiet and somewhat lethargic. It caught me off guard.

On to the pool problems....

Mark decided last night to open the pool and start to get it ready for summer. Here is how we are used to seeing our pool...

very welcoming wouldn't you say?

Here is what Mark found when he uncovered it last night....

did your stomach just sink the way mine did?

Look closely at this picture.

Apparently we have a hole in the lining and the water that leaked out of the hole also caused the sand behind the liner to become unstable and slide down causing a huge hill at the bottom of the pool. The pool guy is estimating $3000 for a new liner and $2000-$3000 to have his guys come in there and reshape the bottom of our pool. It makes me sick to my stomach! He did give us a glimmer of hope, however, he said that our home owners insurance might cover it and told us to get out there and take lots of pictures. We are praying for this to be the case.

I guess that wasn't really that quick but at least I caught y'all up on life at the Hill's
Smiles!

Mom, can you make me this?

Anna seen a bag tutorial on this site and asked me to make it for her with a couple of her own design changes. She wanted the shoulder strap longer and the bag a little "deeper". I also changed the button closure to a snap just because I forgot to sew in the tab when I was making it and I had the snap already in the house. LOL! So Tuesday I made it for her. I still need to put the requested zippered pocket in it but she wanted to use it this weekend and I don't have a zipper in the house so she will have to wait for that. One funny thing about the site where she found the bag at, she found it by googling for a bag. When she gave me the site name to look at it I said, "Hey that name looks familiar" sure enough I subscribe to it in my Google Reader. What a coincidence.
